    About This Piece

Caroline Chinakwe is a Nigerian-born, London-based, self-taught artist. On her website, it states that “Caroline is known for her colourful, powerful, and unapologetic visuals that capture the beauty in black culture and style, while also addressing social issues that affect people of colour, mainly, but not restricted to, within the fashion industry.”

She had this to say about this piece ‘Let go of your past’ – “Everyone has a past, some more daunting than others. We tend to be bound by past events, and more precisely the negative experiences that only stifle our growth. However, the past does not determine the future or define the present.”

This Afrocentric black female portrait is a homage to how bold, strong, daring, and fierce African women can be. It tells a story of how unique African women are while staring in the face of their adversaries standing before them, unwavering by anything because of how self-aware, powerful, and capable they are.

Chinakwe has recently transitioned into fine art after working in the fashion industry for 20 years. She used her experience from being a stylist and designer, her ability to work with a multitude of creatives, as well as her love of fashion, combined these with her natural creative abilities have meant she created some beautiful fine art. Her pieces and passion have developed from a severe lack of diversity in fashion. Chinakwe’s goal is to create and share inspiring and powerful artworks that inspire and empower not only her children but also the next generation.

She once said, “I want my work to have a positive impact and start conversations about the beauty in the diversity of our black skin and the many beautiful shades it comes in.”

“I create art that will challenge the mainstream, igniting an understanding and appreciation for black culture, style, and beauty. As equal to the western ideology of beauty, and to help forge a stronger pan-continent relationship between fashion and art.”

By using a combination of photography, acrylic, and digital collaging, Caroline’s art has a unique signature on it. Her work pushes the boundaries and “portrays the complexities of black women and men, intrinsically woven into their beauty, style, strength, and grace. In her pieces, traditional and non-traditional headwear and hairstyles are worn with sassy confidence, on a melanin-heavy canvas and adorned in jewellery while using makeup and accessories as a form of expressing their identity, individuality, and pride in their culture” as stated in her website.

Caroline Chinakwe has collaborated with jewellery and accessories designers such as Moyobybibi, and Anita Quansah, as well as the hat designer, Maxhatter. Caroline’s art has also been acclaimed by industry influencers including Christene Barberich, co-founder of Refinery29, and Hannah O’Leary, Head of Modern & Contemporary African Art at Sotheby’s, and neo-soul music icon Erykah Badu.
