New challenger Alonso brilliantly fended off the incredibly experienced Schumacher at the San Marino GP, and kick-started a rivalry that lasted many years. Alonso and Schumacher are both well established drivers in the sport, with Alonso gaining two world championships, and Schumacher gaining a record seven world championships.
